Moment of Reflection
The moment of reflection, or thought of the day, is an inspiring or motivating comment worthy of reflection. The thought can be a quotation from someone else or a reflection of your own. The speaker may begin by addressing the Chairperson and members of the audience.
Example:
Mr./Mme. Chairperson, fellow Toastmasters, and welcome guests.
I came across a comment made by George Bernard Shaw that I believe we might all find relevant. The great writer said, Quote: “When I was a young man, I observed that nine out of ten things I did were failures. I didn’t want to be a failure, so I did ten times more work.”
or, in a more personal vein:
Mr./Mme. Chairperson, fellow Toastmasters, and guests.
The other day, while I was waiting in a grocery store lineup, a woman asked the cashier to put back some food items because she didn’t have enough money for them. However, the gentleman behind her insisted upon paying for them, saying he had just gotten a large raise that day and wanted to share his good fortune. His belief was that as you reap, so should you sow. I believe this is a philosophy that all of us could share. Maybe then we’d have a little more harmony in the world.
Guidelines
You will find your delivery of the thought much more effective when it is presented without notes. If needed, use a small cue card instead of a sheet of paper. You have 1 minute to deliver this short role.
